Mace snarled over his shoulder at me without taking any attention off the guy
under him. Preggo s man went limp, the woman backed off and that was that. We
managed to get loaded without any more trouble. I held back a grin when Preggo s
wolfman claimed the front passenger seat with her sandwiched between us. The injured
wolfman rode in the back with the rest of the pack, who, ignoring the drama, had
continued to strip everything of value from Boss s den. It wasn t much more than
clothes, blankets and household stuff but every little bit helped.
A couple of blocks away, Hawk spotted movement and I swung the truck down
a side street, cutting over to Belleview from a different angle and gunning it for the
highway. It d be hard for them to keep up on the city streets but once I hit the interstate,
no fucking way they could. Not even wolfmen could sustain seventy or eighty miles an
hour.
Preggo fidgeted, darting glances at me but apparently reluctant to mess with my
concentration.

You really are human? What the hell are you doing with this pack? Where d
you get the gas to run a monster truck like this? At her first pause for breath, one from
the back seat broke in. Neither seemed to care I hadn t had a chance to answer.
What are they going to do to us? I mean, all of us, not just us women. She
sounded a little panicked.

Relax. Nothing bad is going to happen to you. First, Mace s den is a fucking
fortress defended by a well-armed and trained pack. Second, you aren t the first women
to join them. Even have a mother with a baby born last winter. And then there s Jane
and her M16 toting commandos. You ll be safe.
And the men?
I shrugged. Wolfmen have their own ways of settling shit. Won t be pretty by
human standards but no one s going to die. I paused, thinking of Tat. Unless they
push Mace into it. Follow the rules and you should all fit right in. I hoped like hell I
wasn t blowing smoke out my ass.
I spent the rest of the drive answering questions as best I could, considering I d
only been with Mace less than a month. Felt like a fucking lifetime. Sometimes even in a
good way.
Chapter Five
Vegas! Take these five from Boss pack and a double patrol out to relieve the
south watch post. Then take a look around. Keep alert and put watchers up high. Those
rabids are still out there somewhere. Boss may be out there, too.
Mace turned to Slade. My patrol needs some rest but you can call us if you need
to. I see you ve armed most of the women. See they get in some target practice. Assign
someone to get the new pack settled and aware of our rules. He turned to me in the
same tone. We need fuel for that truck. That s your new top priority. Just hope you can
get started without going out scavenging.
The one thing I d drug my feet over supplying to the pack, fuel they could use
against humans. Although, at this point, that didn t seem as likely. Really wished I d
gone ahead and at least started the process. I ve got most of what I need. If Patty and
Lori can come out to play, it d go a lot faster.
He nodded. Whatever and whoever you need. Everyone hear that? Anyone
